Outside the AVA exists to spotlight wineries and wines that don’t benefit from official appellation recognition — and to be considered on what actually matters: what’s in the glass.
In the United States, American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) play an important role in how wine is understood, marketed, and valued. Many exceptional wines come from within these boundaries. But great wine doesn’t stop at the edge of a map.
Outside the AVA focuses on wineries that usually source grapes from beyond recognized AVAs, choose not to emphasize appellation status, or operate in regions without formal designation. These producers often face assumptions about quality that don’t reflect the care, skill, and intent behind their work.
This project isn’t about dismissing AVAs or rewriting wine rules. It’s about curiosity, context, and fairness — and about giving overlooked wineries & wines the attention they deserve.
Each feature aims to be thoughtful, honest, and grounded in real visits and conversations. No scores. No hype. Just clear explanations, real experiences, and an open mind.
Outside the AVA is a work in progress, built one winery at a time.
